A research into the
House of Greene and their descendants in America |
The Origin: The name
originated in England. Greene or Green is believed to have been
derived from the original "de Greene" (of the Green) or "The family
living on the Green". The Green was a term that referred to the center
of a town or village, ie. "Village Green". See the excerpt from the
book by George Sears, bottom of this page. Remember, There were no
Surnames prior to 1300-1400. A name is not an indication of your
original ancestry.
Results of my
y-DNA
testing show that my Branch of the Green line is
R1B1C9*.
This places the original ancestry in the area of Freisland, a province
in the Netherlands.
Coat of Arms:
Three gold stags on a blue shield.
Motto: Virtus semper viridis
Translation: Virtue is always flourishing
The earliest recorded Greene: This work deals with several of the GREENE lines arriving in America
between 1635 and 1700. The majority of this research is on those who
settled in Rhode Island and migrated to New York.
Name variations associated with this House:
Greene, Green, de Green, de Grene, De la Greene, Grini, Gruen (German)
Along with an attempt at collecting my
Green
ancestry, I have also tried to gather ancestral data on each of my
grandmothers. Below is the scheme so far and growing monthly.
Robert A. GREEN m. Deborah J. CARICO (my-family)
^
Charles Baldwin. GREEN m. Marie L. WHEELER (parents)
^
Charles F. GREEN m. Jane Elida BALDWIN (grandparents)
^
Gardner D. GREEN m. Irene VALENTINE (G-grandparents)
^
John GREEN m. Martha DOUGLASS (GG-grandparents)
^
Unknown GREEN of Rhode Island
Besides my Paternal GREEN ancestry, I am
also directly related to 2 other GREEN lines through my Baldwin
ancestry.
Grandmother, Jane BALDWIN'S Great Grandfather, Thomas Kidder BALDWIN was
married to (1st) Dorcas GREEN, (2nd) Rachel GREEN,
sisters. Dorcas & Rachel are descendants of Peter & Mary GREEN. Peter
GREEN was the son of John GREEN of Haverhill MA. Mary
GREEN was the daughter of Henry GREEN of Hampton NH. Interesting note. in 1692, the
Mary GREEN
mentioned above was tried and convicted for witch craft in the "Salem Witch Trials".
She served a sentence and was later released. |

- 20 JUN 1914 |

Gardner D. Green
(photo c.1890)
Gardner D. Green was born on November
21, 1839 in Kirkland, Oneida County NY. He was the son of John
and Martha (nee Douglass) Green. His family lived in the same home
from 1816 until the death of his father John in 1876. Gardner had 2
siblings, Lucietta Green, born November 1838 and died young, May 20th
1845. Gardner's brother Edward was born in September 1842 and died
some time after 1910 in the Village of Ilion, German Flatts, Herkimer
County NY.
Gardner worked for his half-sister,
Mary Jane Tarbox at their Inn in Clark Mills until he enlisted in the
Union Army, at Dunkirk, Chautauqua County NY on September 3, 1864. He
served as an bridge builder in the 15th NY Engineers. He was
discharged at Ft Barry, VA on 13 Jun 1865.
After his discharge, he migrated to
Manchester, Washtenaw County MI where he met and married Irene (nee
Valentine) Davenport, widow of Aaron Davenport. Gardner's half-sister,
Aristeen Hall preceded him to Manchester and married Richard Hall the
brother of her deceased husband Elisha Hall of Kirkland NY. This was
probably the reason for his relocation from NY.
Gardner later moved from Manchester to
Jackson MI and again to nearby Onondaga, Ingham County MI. where he
and Irene both died and were buried in the Onondaga Cemetery.

John Green 1790-1876
(GG-grandfather)
Kirkland, Oneida NY
Looking for the Ancestry of John & David Green |
John GREEN
was born in New York 09 Dec 1790, parents unknown, and died
03 Mar 1876. His brother David GREEN born abt. 1785 in Rhode
Island, lived with John until his death, sometime between 1860-1870.
John, his wives, David and several other family members are buried in
the Kirkland Cemetery.
John appears to have lived in the same home in Kirkland, Oneida Co. NY
from 1816 until his death in 1876. This is verified by a Deed from Moses
COOK selling John Lot #5, Cox's Patent in Paris, Oneida Co. NY. Kirkland
was formed from Paris in 1829.
John was married 4 times, (1st) Mary COOK, (2nd) Lucy ARNOLD, (3rd)
Martha DOUGLAS and (4th) Eunice STOCKWELL.
Mary COOK is believed to be a niece of Moses COOK. Based on census, they
had 1 son of which nothing is known.
Lucy is believed to be the wid. of Dr. Whitman GILBERT of MA. They had 3
daughters, Aristeen, Loreen and Mary Jane.
Martha DOUGLAS, my gg-grandmother, is the daughter of Isaac & Sarah
(GLEASON) DOUGLAS and a descendant of the Clan Douglas of
Scotland. Ancestry is included here. They had 2 sons, Gardner D GREEN,
my g-grandfather, and Edward C GREEN. They also had a daughter, Lucietta
who died at age 7.
Eunice STOCKWELL married John 14 May 1850. No children.

Need help with my "Brick Wall" |
Who were the parents of John & David Green?
-
We know John was born in NY and his brother was born
in RI.
-
The family must have moved from RI btw. 1785-1790.
-
John of Paris, purchases from Moses COOK, Lot#5
in Paris, Oneida NY Dec. 27, 1816 (recorded Mar. 30, 1818).
-
John is found on all census records from 1820 to 1870
in Paris / Kirkland, Oneida, NY.
-
I have not positively located David on any census
records except 1850 & 1860.
-
John & David are both buried in Kirkland Cemetery
although no stone was found for David.
Theory - John & David are the
sons of
Jedediah & Waitstill "Waite" (BATES) GREENE
- of RI, moved to German Flatts, Herkimer NY in 1790. Later, they moved to
Paris, Oneida NY. There were 10 children, including a David, all born
in RI. David was born between 1780-1790. Due to the lack of record
keeping I believe the birth of John (David's brother, my gg-gfr) went
unrecorded.

Our Related Cousin Ancestry
Tangled Branches
To add to the
confusion !!! |
A note about this ancestry:
I have include some family lines that extend back many hundreds of
years into European history. Both the Douglas and Greene lines claim
"William the Conqueror, King of England" in
their lineage. Although included, there is very little documentation
for supporting these claims. The Douglas line is probably more
accurate because their history was recorded back to "Robert the
Bruce".

has planted itself in my research as well. I have made a lot of notes
included in the Tree explaining my research. Hopefully,
I have corrected some errors that will benefit others who read them.

OF
THE ORIGINAL, ANTIQUITY, NAME, ARMS, ALLIANCES, GREATNESS AND
POSSESSIONS OF THE HOUSE OF GREENE.
Of the origin of the House of Greene we have no certain information,
but it is apparent they assumed their Name and Arms from an allusion
to their principal and beloved lordship, which was Buckton, or the
Town of Bucks, in the county of Northampton, being in the Hundred of
Spelho, a place memorable for the excellence of its soil and situation
and a spacious and delightful green upon which, at the desire of the
Lords, was yearly held and exercised a Fair with particular and
extraordinary privilege. Hence they were called "Greene" or "of the
Greene." And from Buckton or the town of Bucks they have assumed for
their Arms in a field azure Three bucks trippant. In the first mention
of the family, we find it in a very flourishing condition, possessed
of the Manor of Buckton from which the Lords thereof did take their
usual style as also of the lordships of Heyborne, Heydmoncourte,
Dadington, Ashby Mares and Grene's Norton, the latter whereof was held
by particular obligation of holding up the lord's right hand toward
the King upon Christmas day wherever he should be at that time in
England. And of these was Lord Sir Thomas of Buckton, or Sir Thomas
Grene of Buckton who lived in the reign of King Edward I. Of these
Grene's we find divers to have been qualified by their riches and
power and the esteem they held for the principal employments in the
counties where they lived. Among the other advantages of this House
the great blood of which it was participant did honor it very much, it
having had the fortune to ally itself to the great Houses of Stafford,
De La Zouche, Mauduit, Talbot, Ferrers of Chartley and Rosse, all of
the illustrious and old nobility. But at last,
coming to the fortune of all transitory things, it concluded in Sir
Henry Grene who, being without issue male, the Arms, blood and
inheritance of this family came by a daughter to the Veres that were
Lords of Addington and from them by another heir to the present Earl
of Peterborough.----Halstead.
ORIGIN OF THE NAME
The following memorandum attached to, or a part of the parchment
pedigree of the "House of Greene" presented to the Boston Athenaeum
Library in 1881 by Williaqm Batchelder Greene, was possibly made by
Mr. Burt, the compiler of the chart. The theory as to the origin of
the name Grene or Greene is well worthy of consideration, and the
three points upon which the connection of Sir Henry Grene, Lord Chief
Justice of England, is based, are certainly sufficiently strong to
awaken the interest of all those who bear the name in America.
HOUSE OF GREENE LORDS OF BUCKTON, ETC.,
COUNTY NORTHAMPTONSHIRE.
On origin: "The name of this family is not of Saxon or Scandinavian
origin as its present form might suggest, such as Wood, Vale, Green,
etc., names taken from localities and found in almost every country of
modern Great Britain. During the 12th & 13th centuries flourished a
number of minor Barons (i.e., not possessing more, or as much as,
thirteen knight's fees and a quarter) bearing the name of De la Greene
(or Grene) in Co. Northampton. Sir Henry Greene, Lord of Buckton, may
be counted with these by three facts;
First, that on one of his seals attached to an Indenture now in the
archives of the British Museum, is found the inscription---'Sigill
(Henri) ci Grene, Milit,' (this in old English characters); Secondly,
that the said Sir Henry held his lands in capite by the same service
as the feudal lords before mentioned, i.e., by lifting up the right
hand on Michaelmas Day wherever the King should be in England (Harl.
MSS.); Thirdly, all these claim much the same family alliances (as
found on their various records and on their tombs). Tracing the name
further back, we find the name De la Grene replaced by Del Grene (the
latter seems to have been one of the latest of the Lords of the
township of Newsholm) and before the Norman Conquest the name of
Greene disappears all together and we are said to find Grini or Del
Grini in counties York and Northampton. this would show the great
antiquity of the family as well as suggest a Latin origin. It is
worthy of note that a patrician family existed at Rome, shortly after
the Roman conquest, of the same name, and that the name is still borne
by certain nobles in the northern part of Italy near Belluno.
In addition to the above memorandum are a few notes on the opposite
upper corner of the chart; the first giving names and baptisms of the
children of John Greene, who emigrated to the American colonies, and
others referring to General Nathaniel Greene of the Revolutionary Army
and descendant of said John; also to that line of his descendants who
settled in New Hampshire (records now partially erased); and to the
Gardiner Greene's and Copley-Greene's of Boston. In another
handwriting is a note relating to the Greene's of Ireland on the
authority of Burke, being endorsed, "signed by Sir Bernard Burke." It
has special interest in connection with the recently published
pedigree following "Greene's Norton, Northamptonshire," where descent
is claimed by this Irish branch from the Northamptonshire family,
though proof is not conclusive.
